(Dēng Hái Liàng Zhe) - The Light Is Still On

AIrmin Van Buuren · 3 August 2026 · 2:53

My grandmother left the porch light on. Every night, whether anyone was coming or not.

That's where this one came from. The people who wait for us don't announce it. They just leave the door open and let the years pass, and we only notice when we finally turn around.

138 BPM in A minor. The vocal is Mandarin, recorded close and dry, sitting forward in the mix while everything behind it goes wide. The verses stay in Aeolian and the chorus lifts to Dorian, one raised note carrying the whole shift from waiting to arriving.

There's a line about four pairs of chopsticks still set on the table. It's the quietest moment in the track and it's the one the song is built around.

Having said that, no reverb on that line. It didn't need help.

Lyrics

Approximate English translation. Some lines carry meaning in Mandarin that doesn't cross over cleanly: Outside the window, the snow has fallen again The light you left still holds a little brightness I walked too far, through too many places Only to find every step pointed one way You never asked when I'd come back You only said, the door stays open Home isn't a place, it's where you stand However long the wind blew, that's how long the light stayed on I crossed mountains and seas, crossed every foreign land I turned around, and you were still standing where you were Your hands are thinner than I remember Four pairs of chopsticks are still set on the table I thought growing up meant walking further away Then learned growing up means learning to look back We're all rushing And forgot who we're rushing for Home isn't a place, it's where you stand However long the wind blew, that's how long the light stayed on I crossed mountains and seas, crossed every foreign land I turned around, and you were still standing where you were I turned around, and you were still standing where you were
